Soft Pretzels

Simple soft pretzels baked fresh in your oven!
Complexity Level:  Easy
Soft Pretzels
What You Need:
3 tbsp Baking Soda
1 packet Dry Yeast
1 tbsp Sugar
1 cup warm water
3 cups flour

Heat water to about 100 degrees F. (hot tap water will work). I like to add the warm water and yeast in a glass with the sugar. This allows the yeast to feed off the sugar, and will activate the yeast quickly -- let it sit 10 minutes (left). With this, I add the mixture to the flour and blend. Set aside and cover with a warm wet towel for 1 hour -- allowing the mixture to double in size.

Add 3 tbsp baking soda to 8 cups of water, and bring to boil. When rolling out the dough, spray hands with a non-stick cooking spray, and make shapes with the dough! This is great for kids too! Next, boil the shapes for 2 minutes in the baking soda water mixture -- baking soda gives the soft pretzel flavor we all love! I enjoy making rolls and sticks out of the dough, but all shapes and sizes are welcome.

After boiling (right), place on a towel and pat dry, sprinkling with salt (of your topping of choice-- aka cinnamon, nutmeg, parmesan, garlic, onion powder, etc) and spray both the dough and pan with non stick cooking spray.

Bake at 350º for about 12 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve hot or cold with any dipping sauce desired! Yellow mustard is great, as is sour cream mixed with a packet of onion soup mix -- I just love these plain and warm!!

Meal Idea: Make shapes as large rolls to create bread for an awesome pretzel sandwich!

These can be boiled to get that outer soft pretzel flavor, see recipe, or baked skipping that step for a more bread taste. They are great when you get crafty and add spices: Rosemary, Garlic, Cheese, toss the baked ones in cinnamon and sugar, icing, etc.

XOXO,
